ORONO TOOK ON MINNEAPOLIS WASHBURN IN THE GIRLS STATE CLASS A FINALS OF THE SOCCER TOURNAMENT

Orono and Minneapolis Washburn went up against each other in the Minnesota State High School League’s class A girls state title game.

Washburn did a good job of moving the ball down the field. They looked to keep the ball out of the Orono’s zone.

Washburn had good looks at the goal in the first half.

Both of these teams went after each other. They both knew where to put the ball so the other team couldn’t get it. Washburn talked to each other on the field and knew where everyone was on the field.

The Orono defense was strong. They didn’t let Washburn get open shots on goal.

Orono took advantage of their corner kicks and free kicks as they had chances to score in the first half.

Orono’s Sophie Babo was all over the field. She did a good job of bringing the ball down the field.

Babo did a good job of getting the ball to her teammates.

Washburn’s Morgan Cottew had a shot on goal late in the first half but was not able to get a goal.

At halftime the score was tied at 0.

As the second half for underway Washburn continued to move the ball down the field well as they looked to weave between the Orono’s defenders.

The ball moved back and forth throughout the second half. Both teams did a good job of attacking the net.

Goalkeepers Orono’s Jessica Woessner and Washburn’s Taylor Cottew came up with some nice saves throughout the second half.

With 25:25 left in regulation Babo was injured on a slide tackle which drew a yellow card. Babo was taken off the field on a stretcher and taken to a local hospital by ambulance.

As play resumed after the injury timeout both teams continued to attack the net.

Orono continued to get good looks at the goal.

The game was scoreless after regulation.

Washburn’s Maya Rajacich dribbled the ball down the field and had a great shot on goal but
Woessner came up with a save.

Neither team was able to score a goal in the first overtime period.

There was another 10 minute overtime period.

Washburn had their chances in the second overtime period.

Both teams gave it everything that they had throughout the entire game.

The game was tied at 0 after both overtime periods. The game went into the penalty kicks.

Penalty kicks was the best out of five. Orono won the game 1-0 on Claire Bash penalty kick.

With the 1-0 victory over Minneapolis Washburn Orono won the girls’ class A state tournament.
